    I firmly believe if Howefield makes the field goal that the Houston Oilers still exist today. The 1991 Redskins have been widely acknowledged as one of the all time great teams. Even though they lost to the Cowboys and Eagles later on, the Oilers by far gave the Redskins their toughest and most physical game. This was the only game all year that Mark Rypien was held to under 200 yards passing and did not have a touchdown pass. The Oilers had one of the few secondaries in the NFL that year capable of shutting down Monk, Clark, and Sanders. If they win here then they leave tied with Washington at 9-1 for best record in the league and having just proved they can take down the best. It’s quite possible they ride this momentum to the Super Bowl for a rematch and with it being in a dome that favors Houston’s run and shoot offense and having already shown they can shut down the Redskins high powered offense here, I can see them winning the Super Bowl and this garnering enough fan support that they get a new stadium and never leave for Tennessee.

    Loved it. All of these guys were amazing. But, I would probably have added Josh Gibson from the Negro Leagues and Sadaharu Oh from the Japan league. Did they play against the same completion? I would say that compared with Ty Cobb and Triss Speaker - absolutely - and probably better. I think Ted deserves to be #2 on the list behind The Babe - who amazingly enough - finished with a higher career batting average than Tony Gwynn (who I saw in person many times and absolutely loved - best pure hitter of the past 50 years).

    Most people don’t put Dimaggio high enough because relative low HR count. He lost 3 years in his prime, and according to Bill James he was the most penalized person in history for his home field ballpark. Yankee Stadium 450+ to left center. James figures he lost 120 HR’s because of that, and another 100+ to WW2. He would have been close to a 600 HR guy with those too pieces while batting .325 and striking out 360 times his whole career…and played Yankee Stadiums then cavernous CF at highest abilities. There’s a reason he was voted greatest living ballplayer in ‘69.

    • @allucht6664

      I love everything that Roberto Clemente stood for… But he was 38 years old when he died and just barely landed on 3000 career hits. He had a solid .317 batting average… But had very little power with only 240 home runs. One might argue that the best chance for Clemente to make the list is if you remove Frank Robinson … who had a nearly identical 2,943 hits. Frank Robinson is on the top 20 list and he only had a career batting average of .294 but he hit like 586 Home runs with that batting average. Remember… Batting average is a percentage. So while Clemente got a hit 31.7% of the time… Frank Robinson was not that far behind him at 29.4%… But again with well over 2X the number of home runs! In fact, Frank Robinson beat Roberto Clemente as a hitter by knocking in over 500 more RBIs in his career… Robinson Had 88 more doubles… Robinson had a .389 on base percentage to Clemente’s .359 career on base percentage despite Clemente’s higher batting average to start with… So one could argue that Robinson had a better eye for balls versus strikes. Frank Robinson had an on base plus slugging Percentage of .926 to Clemente’s .834. Clemente was a fine player… and A superior defender … but with career hits being almost identical to Frank Robinson, the only significant stats that Clemente was better was the .317 batting average and the number of triples Clemente hit in his career. All other important categories were won by Frank Robinson… still the only player in major-league baseball history to win the most valuable player award in both the National League and the American League.

      @allucht6664 Місяць тому

      Cobb had NO POWER. If you’re a lover of singles… Then your vote should be for Pete Rose, but no one in their right mind would ever think Pete Rose is even in the top 20 all-time hitters. Ted Williams combined average WITH POWER and is therefore for the superior hitter. And I would even argue that Rogers Hornsby was better than Ty Cobb because they had similar career batting averages… But Rogers Hornsby had home run power that Ty Cobb could only dream about.

      Sliding Billy Hamilton is a hall of famer. He hit .344 lifetime, and scored more than 1,600 runs in his career, which is more runs than he had games played. He stole as many bases as Cobb did, and still holds the record for runs scored per at bat(3.01). He also batted over .400 one year.

    As a 17 year old TW saw the great negro league star OSCAR CHARLESTON AND NEVER PUT HIM IN HIS 20 BEST HITTERS OF ALL TIME IN HIS MUSEUM. AFTER SAYING CHARLESTON WAS A GREAT HITTER. HOWS THAT?

      Sadly, many of the great players from the Negro leagues do not receive their full due. But in reality, part of the issue was that formal recordkeeping in the Negro leagues was poor at best. To fault TW for not including Oscar Charleston when TW did not witness him play day in and day out… Nor was there video footage of Charleston over a 15 year period… Nor was there much written documentation in the form of widely verified sports articles primarily due to racism during that era. Very sad.
